Québec's Military Landscape — End of May to October 2008

Naval Museum of Québec—Croisières AML

U-995All summer long, people coming aboard the cruise boat Louis-Jolliet will be treated to an exhibition of military pictures of the city, and will thus have the opportunity of learning more on the history of Québec. What makes this exhibition special is that the pictures will be fixed to the ship's guard rails. Visitors will thus be able to see the city's current landscape at the same time as ancient illustrations showing the city's defensive works and the military presence in the city. Furthermore, use the cruise as an opportunity to see a scale model of the German submarine U-995, built by Mr. Harold Eckhardt.

Ocean blue, ivory white
The odyssey of a miniature fleet
Bernier, Lecouvie, Déry

May 21 to September 14, 2008

Naval Museum of Québec—Musée maritime du Québec—Québec Port Authority

The Québec Port Authority's brand new interpretation centre in Brown Cove, on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, will open in May 2008. It will include two exhibition rooms, for which the Naval Museum of Québec and the Musée maritime du Québec were mandated to jointly prepare an exhibition on the relationship between Man and River. Ocean blue, ivory white traces the journey of three men who, each in his own way, contributed to a magnificent collection of miniature ivory ships: explorer Joseph-Elzéar Bernier brought the precious material back from his Arctic voyages, craftsman Edmond Lecouvie meticulously sculpted the ships and collector Stanislas Déry acquired them to conserve them. These three men, all passionately in love with the St. Lawrence River, will undoubtedly transfer to you the pleasure of preserving our maritime heritage. Come discover their universe through the incomparable Lecouvie-Déry collection!

A Meeting Place — Starting April 10th 2008

Royal 22e Régiment Museum

In its evolution from a colony into a country, Canada has experienced many changes over the course of its history. Exploration by a few nations led to settlement, colonization, conquest, and an eventual opening up to the world. Native Peoples, French, and British from vastly different backgrounds crossed paths during the time of New France, while in another time, Canadians met with the British and various other nations. These meetings resulted in alliances, conflicts, co-habitation, exchanges, racial and cultural blending, power and assistance.

Like a novel, this exhibit describes some of these key meetings and uncovers select objects from the collections of the Royal 22e Régiment Museum. For the most part, these items have been assembled over the years by soldiers returning from their missions, and they bring to life a few pages of Canadian history, from the time of New France to today, and recall this meeting of cultures.
