By Sea and in Stone — May 29 to November 15, 2008

Naval Museum of Québec—Museum of the Royal 22e Régiment—Museum of the Régiment les Voltigeurs de Québec—Museum of the Régiment de la Chaudière

By Sea and in StoneThe military museums of the Québec area come together to present an exclusive military history exhibition. By Sea and in Stone will provide a fresh look on the Québec region's military heritage, while illuminating the past and current roles of the different garrisons stationed in Québec and Lévis. The St. Lawrence River brought our ancestors to the strategic emplacement that came to be known as Québec. Once here, they must build defensive works to protect themselves from their enemies, who also used the River to invade and displace. As time went on, military conflicts helped forge the military aspect of Québec's heritage. The By Sea and in Stone exhibition addresses the development of the defensive works and the elaboration of defensive strategies implemented in the region to meet different threats. Furthermore, deployments of military forces from Québec outside the region are a major outreach element for the city; that is why the exhibition also shows this aspect of our history. Finally, the exhibition throws light on the presence and on the current role of the Canadian Forces based in the Québec region.

Le Réfectoire — May 29 to November 15, 2008

Naval Museum of Québec

Le RéfectoireSince 1608, the St. Lawrence has been at the very heart of Canadian naval history. The exchanges between the sailors fighting on this battlefield, be they Champlain and the brothers Kirke, Phips and Frontenac, or many others, were sometimes courteous, sometimes diplomatic, as ships and other possessions are in the middle of these historic talks, and sometimes change hands. In fact, the adversaries' main goal was to see, each for his own profit, the coveted territories change hands! Once more, the Naval Museum of Québec is at the vanguard of military museology innovation. The Museum has mandated artist Isabelle Laverdière to create a work of art describing her interpretation of the exchanges between the enemy sailors through the centuries. Visitors will literally enter the artist's imagination and experience the atmospheres of her vision. An exhibition where naval history becomes a sensory experience!

The St. Lawrence at War: International seminar
November 6 and 7, 2008

Naval Museum of Québec—Royal Military College of Canada

For two days, historians, museologists and other related specialists will meet in Québec City to investigate the issue of the impact military events occurring on the St. Lawrence and shaping the history of our nation. Speakers will tread far beyond a simple presentation of facts, and will emphasize a global vision of the effects of naval history. Issues addressed will be as much social as historical, artistic or museological. The seminar will be held partly at the Naval Museum of Québec, partly at the Musée de la civilisation.
