The Royal Canadian Navy assigns an emblem and a name to all its ships and buildings (bases, schools, etc.) at the time they are commissioned. The abbreviation HMCS, which is an integral part of these names, means "Her/His Majesty's Canadian Ship". For a long time, the English abbreviations were used in both English and French. Nowadays, the abbreviation NCSM (Navire canadien de Sa Majesté) is used to designate Canadian ships in the French language.
