| The Battle of the St. Lawrence was initially a series of military events that occurred in the river and Gulf of the St. Lawrence. In fact, the presence of German submarines in the St. Lawrence and their actions against Allied ships initiated this battle in Canadian waters. Mainly between 1942 and 1944, German submarines attacked merchant ships responsible for restocking Great Britain with goods and materiel, as well as Canadian war ships responsible for escorting the supply convoys. The goal of these attacks was to weaken Great Britain's strength by withholding the necessary elements for the Allied victory from its population and its defenders. Thus, German submarines, over a period of a little more than two years, torpedoed twenty or more ships in the waters of the river and Gulf of the St. Lawrence. |
